Under the Barefoot

Sweet-tooth Confessions of a barefooted nearly-pastry chef

The other day, Naomi and i were argueing the benefits of a straw. Dont ask why. thats just what we do. In the end she made a comment that seemed to shut me up BUT i needed to prove it.

Straws are Vintage

So i found some photo’s to prove that straws indeed are old-school retro that us 50’s wannabe’s cant live without next time we’re at the diner – and arent just silly pieces of plastic that cost extra:

So it is safe to say that yes, straws are vintage and i will never knock the wonderful invention again 🙂 Wikipedia had some interesting facts about straws though:

  • The straw was patented by Marvin C. Stone in 1888.
  • The concertine straw was invented in 1937 by Joseph Friedman
  • The argentines had a similar invention called a bombilla.
  • Straws reduce tooth decay (who knew!)
  • Earlier straws were thinner so most people used two (hence the photo’s)

As a small note- i found this really interesting website on my internet travels that focused on straw art with some hectic cool photo’s: http://recycledfrockery.com/mm-suck-on-these-green-design-with-a-muddy-edge/trackback/ (it takes a while to load so wees geduldig – its worth it)

So after that pointless piece of information – Happy Drinking 🙂
